There has been a sharp increase in the number of people out of work, it is the biggest for nearly two years and far worse than expected.

The number of unemployed rose by 80,000 between May and July and now stands at 2.51 million.

There was a big surge in the number of 18 to 24 year olds who are without jobs and female unemployment is at its highest for more than 20 years.
